Microclimate

Climate data collection (Bild: Reiner Gebhardt)

The special role of of weather and climate for the survival of ticks has already been discussed in module 1.

In module 2, as in module 1, we examine the influence of microclimate on tick activity and density. Additionally, we test for correlations between the microclimate, the tick infestation of small mammals and pathogen prevalence.

At five field sites, extensively equipped monitoring stations have been installed that record both meteorological and soil parameters. This creates a very detailed picture of the microclimate in the forest and in the adjacent open fields and their relationship. In addition, soil and vegetation-related data are recorded and then analyzed in relation to the tick data.
